Congressman Dan Crenshaw claimed his Twitter account had been breached after someone flagged that he was following an escort on the platform.

Zachary Petrizzo shared a screenshot online yesterday which showed Crenshaw's account was one of more 13,000 followers on the page.

Within hours Crenshaw had replied, telling people to 'grow up' and that he had changed his password - appearing to claim his account had been hacked.

The escort account belongs to a woman in New York City who goes by the name of Olivia May on her profile, which is private and people must request to follow her before they can see her content.

Her Twitter description reads: 'Your favourite long legged girl next door. Lingerie lover. Globe trotter.'

Taking to social media yesterday, Mr Petrizzo wrote: 'Congressman Dan Crenshaw is currently following an escort on Twitter who charges $1,500 per hour.'

Alongside the screenshot showing Crenshaw follows the page, he also shared Olivia May's price list which ranges from $1,500 for an hour to $10,000 for a full day.

Within hours of his post, the Texas congressman had replied: 'Grow up people, no one on my staff, nor I, purposefully followed this account.

'Thanks for flagging. Passwords changed.'

Responses to Mr Petrizzo's tweet were mixed, with some attacking him for his post and siding with Crenshaw and others calling the congressman a hypocrite.

Within hours of the tweet being shared, Crenshaw had responded to shut down any claims

One person wrote: 'There is nothing wrong with legal and consensual sex work. Liberty means bodily autonomy. The problem is people like Crenshaw who are essentially hypocrites.'

Another said: 'Definitely nothing wrong with what she does for a living. But not only hypocrisy, but he did make a vow to his wife, so if he does use this woman's services, I hope it's with his wife's knowledge and sign-off.'

'I don’t think he did anything wrong at all other than act hysterical when the situation came out, claiming he was hacked,' one said. 'Please, grow up. Following someone on Twitter means nothing, nothing at all. Summing up, Methinks he doth protest too much.'

When Crenshaw replied, another Twitter user said: 'You didn’t do anything wrong. Don’t back pedal like this or blame hackers like you’re a Boomer. People want fighters. Get with it.'

Since the incident, Olivia's follower total has increased by 2,000.

Last week Crenshaw was one of 106 House Republicans who signed on to a friend of the court brief in support of Texas' lawsuit which aims to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
