Housing Secretary Dr. Ben Carson has described his frightening experience with COVID-19 – as well as his effort to treat it with an unproven remedy followed by a special intervention by President Trump to get him experimental drugs.

And based on the symptoms he described, the unproven remedy he tried could have even contributed to his symptoms.

Carson, who was hospitalized last month after testing positive for the coronavirus, told Fox News his symptoms got so bad he 'couldn't even keep water down.'

It began with fever, chills and some 'aches,' said Carson, a pediatric neurosurgeon.

'It wasn't so bad. I took some oleander extract. I got much better,' said Carson.

'And then the bottom fell out. Because of the co-morbidities, I couldn't mount an appropriate antibody response and I deteriorated very rapidly,' he said. 'Fevers, chills, couldn't even keep water down, aches coughing respiratory problems.'

Oleander extract is an unproven treatment touted by My Pillow executive and Trump associate Mike Lindell.

Trump had promoted the treatment at an Oval Office meeting back in July that included Carson over the summer, Axios reported over the summer. Trump 'basically said: …'The FDA should be approving it,' said Lindell, who was there.

'Oleandrin? Yeah that would definitely end up killing people,' wrote Dr. David Juurlink an MD, PhD at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto, as MedPage reported.

Juurlink told the publication Oleandrin, which is manufactured from a toxic plant,  is 'akin to digoxin. Too much can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, but the main concern is arrhythmias, which can be fatal.'

Carson, 69, says he suffers from several comorbidities.

Carson, who was treated at the same Walter Reed facility where Trump was treated when he got the virus, says the president made a special intervention on his behalf to get him the same antibody treatment manufactured by Regeneron.

'I was able to get a special dispensation, at that time the monoclonal antibody hadn't been FDA approved. The president signed some papers and I was able to get that infusion and I started feeling better almost immediately.'

'It's not just elderly people, it can be young people who have obesity or diabetes, or who have some respiratory issues. So we need to educate ourselves, work with your health care professional, find out who the vulnerable people are in your family and make sure we protect them,' Carson told Fox host Martha McCallum.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani also disclosed that he was able to get the Regeneron regimen while being treated at Georgetown University Hospital.

'The minute I took the cocktail yesterday I felt 100 per cent better,' he told WABC radio last week. 'It works very quickly. Wow!' He also said he was taking Remdesivir.

He said he was assisted by White House physician Dr. Sean Conley, who tended to Trump when he was hospitalized in October, but did not say that Trump directly intervened to get him the drugs, which are in short supply and sometimes administered by lottery.

Carson said he has 'great respect for this disease process.'
