Does this mean the President knows his bid to overturn the election is doomed? Donald Trump is about to set up his own 'leadership political action committee' to raise millions and act as Republican kingmaker when he leaves office

Donald Trump is preparing to announce a new leadership political action committee as early as this week, officials said Monday, in a potential attempt for the president to retain power within the Republican Party even after leaving office.

'The president always planned to do this, win or lose, so he can support candidates and issues he cares about, such as combating voter fraud,' Trump campaign's Director of Communications Tim Murtaugh told The New York Times.

Although Murtaugh says plans for the PAC have been in the works for some time now, the announcement will come just days after outlets have called the 2020 election for Joe Biden and Trump has refused to give into calls for him to concede to the former vice president.

The formation of the new group is a sign that Trump realizes his legal attempts to overturn Biden's lead are unlikely to be successful and this action would certainly act as a way for him to hold onto control and influence within the GOP past his time in the White House.

A so-called 'leadership PAC' is established, maintained or controlled by a current or former federal official, whether that be a member of Congress or other prominent political figure.

These types of committees are only able to accept up to $5,000 in donations per donor each year – a much lower amount than the limits in place for committees formed by campaigns and the Parties.

A leadership PAC, however, can accept donations from an unlimited number of donors and from other PACs. They are also able to independently spend unlimitedly from their funds to benefit political candidates' travel, polling and consultants.

'President Trump is not going anywhere anytime soon,' Matt Gorman, a Republican strategist, told The Times. 'He's going to insert himself in the national debate in a way that's unlike any of his predecessors.'

Since the presidential race was called on Saturday by the Associated Press as well as several other major media outlets, Trump has cast doubt on the results and told advisers he is seriously considering running in 2024 if the vote is certified in Congress for Biden.

The leadership PAC would give Trump the means to travel and engage in political activity even if he never ran for office again.

Biden garnered the more than 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency as several crucial states called the race for the former vice president in the days following the election.

Trump has maintained there was voter fraud on a wide scale, especially in some key battleground states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Georgia – where Biden is leading by around 10,000 votes but the race has not yet been called there.

His campaign is moving forward with legal challenges in those states and others, like Arizona and Nevada.

The president claims that Democrats have cheated through multiple channels besides fraud, like not allowing Republican poll watchers to observe those counting the ballots and sending out mail-in ballots to all registered voters, not just those who requested it.

It does not appear Trump has any substantial evidence to prove these accusations.

Trump is far from done with politics, as his political brand has now become intertwined into his personal and business persona.
