Lindsey Graham Humiliates Democrats As They Attempt To Stall ACB's Nomination Process (Cartoon)

Democrats in the U.S. Senate, who for weeks have accused President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans of attempting to “jam through” Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, took another loss on Thursday as their strategy to boycott a vote that would delay Barrett’s nomination from being sent to the full Senate floor was swiftly and absolutely shut down by Sen. Lindsey Graham.

As Fox News reported, Senate Democrats — led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer — refused to show up for a Thursday vote to push Barrett’s nomination to the floor. Instead, they filled their vacant seats with pictures of Americans who would lose their Obamacare benefits.

The Democrats’ PR stunt was a total failure, as Graham exercised procedure that allowed a unanimous vote by the majority of the Senate Judiciary Committee to override the Democrats’ boycott of the process.

“We are not going to allow them to take over the committee. They made a choice not to participate,” Graham said.

“Under the committee rules you need two members of the minority to conduct business,” Graham added. “But they’re intentionally denying us that participation. They’re boycotting the committee. So what I will do as chairman there will be a majority of the committee present. We will waive that rule. We will report Judge Barrett out. She will go to the floor. And hopefully, by Monday or Tuesday, she will be on the court.”

That’s exactly what happened on Thursday morning.

Making matters even more embarrassing for Schumer’s band of clowns on the committee was Graham’s strategy to take the vote early in the morning instead of the originally scheduled afternoon vote, as Democrats were planning to hold a late morning press conference outside of the Capitol to express their disdain for the vote.

Graham had some final words for his Democrat colleagues in the nation’s upper chamber.

“As to my Democratic colleagues’ refusal to attend the markup, that is a choice they are making. I believe it does a disservice to Judge Barrett who deserves a vote, up or down,” he said.

Sen. Mike Lee commented on the Democrats’ boycott of the markup meeting, looking back on the nightmare that was the nomination process for Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“I suppose we should be grateful that a walkout is all the Democrats will do to Judge Barrett today. Not all nominees have been so lucky,” Lee said.

It’s clear that Republican senators, like Graham, learned a lot from the Kavanaugh hearings. Knowing how to counter their ridiculous boycotts and delay tactics means that unless Democrats win a majority in the Senate come November 3, their dirty procedural tricks will no longer be effective as long as Republicans stand strong and are willing to pick up a political brick and fight back.
