A 12-year-old boy in Florida has been arrested after bringing three handguns to his school.

The child was led away from the Lighthouse Christian School in Callahan, Florida, and taken into custody on Thursday, September 10.

The boy was arrested after a teacher at the private school, which charges $8,200 for annual tuition, noticed how heavy his lunchbox appeared to be and decided to hold it.

The teacher discovered two handguns and two boxes of ammunition inside the lunchbox, according to ABC Action News in Tampa.

A loaded semi-automatic gun was later found in the boy's possession as well.

KENS adds that this is not the first time the child was involved in an incident involving a weapon.

The boy's mother stated that he had recently killed the family's pet chihuahua with a pellet gun.

Troy Arnold, the principal of the school, shared that the boy showed his weapons to other students at the school that day.

Staff at the school also came across disturbing images, including a drawing of a man outside the school with guns, surrounded by dead bodies marked with the color red.

The boy's mother reportedly unlocked a gun safe for her uncle, but mistakenly left it unlocked, allowing the boy to access the weapons.

Inside the lunchbox were a large revolver, a sub-compact semi-automatic pistol, and two boxes of .38 caliber ammunition for the guns.

'The response to the teacher and all was very admirable, she did a great job of doing her job and diligent - that's what it's all about,' principal Arnold said to First Coast News.

'Most of the time, it ends up there's nothing much to it. So, this just happened to be one of those times when I'm thankful we found it.'
