But a surge in coronavirus spikes across California prompted local officials to close city-operated beaches in Laguna Beach and Orange County on July 4, The Los Angeles Times reports.
Officials said they're concerned about increasing infections if beaches get overcrowded and social distancing is flouted.
'Particularly on the Fourth of July when there were fireworks... it looked like sardines in a can,' said Laguna Beach Mayor Pro Tem Steve Dicterow.
'There was no space in between people. My concern is that even without the fireworks, there just may be a huge density of people on the beaches.'
