President Donald Trump railed against colleges he accused of left-wing 'indoctrination' Friday and threatened to take back federal support and major tax breaks at a time institutions are trying to sort out whether they can host students this fall.
Trump threatened to order his Treasury secretary to look at trying to remove the non-profit exemption that colleges and universities use to maintain their bottom line – although he didn't specify how he carry out a change or decide who longer deserved to keep it.
'Too many Universities and School Systems are about Radical Left Indoctrination, not Education,' Trump tweeted in the air en route to Florida for a series of events. 'Therefore, I am telling the Treasury Department to re-examine their Tax-Exempt Status ...  and/or Funding, which will be taken away if this Propaganda or Act Against Public Policy continues,' Trump wrote.

'Our children must be Educated, not Indoctrinated!'
Current federal policies provide tax exempt status to all public universities, without conducting a government review of campus ideology. Trump did not specify how he would specify which universities would lose their status, and which could still get public funds.
'The vast majority of public and private universities and colleges are tax-exempt entities as defined by IRC Section 501(c)(3) because of their educational purposes—purposes that the federal government has long recognized as fundamental to fostering the productive and civic capacity of its citizens—and/or the fact that they are state governmental entities,' according to the American Association of Universities website.
Trump did not specify what particular propaganda or act had sparked the review. He and members of his administration have erupted at 'cancel culture.'
The attack comes after the administration's Student and Exchange Visitor Program suddenly announced that it would not issue visas for students attending schools that do not open to in-person learning in the fall.
The move was immediately taken as a pressure tactic to force schools to reopen – a case Trump is making publicly while his administration tries to demonstrate the nation is coming back even as coronavirus cases surge.
States rely in part on foreign students, who pay out-of-state tuition, for a substantial part of their revenue. California's attorney general sued on behalf of the state university system, as have Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Northeastern University
The critique has extended beyond threats to free speech on campus to include sudden actions by schools, cities and other institutions to wipe away symbols in the wake of the killing of George Floyd – including a push to remove confederate statues and rename military bases that bear the names of confederate generals.
On Thursday, New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio joined volunteers in painting huge 'Black Lives Matter' yellows of Fifth Avenue in front of Trump Tower.

Just when Trump was firing off his tweet about schools, Alyssa Farrah, spokeswoman for Vice President Mike Pence, used Twitter to blast a sudden boycott of Goya foods, after the company's CEO praised Trump at the White House Thursday.
'The Left is boycotting one of the largest Hispanic-owned businesses in the US - Goya- because it’s CEO came to the @WhiteHouse to discuss Hispanic prosperity initiatives. @realDonaldTrump stands w/minority-owned businesses &individuals’ right to their own views! #EndCancelCulture,' she wrote.
Robert Unanue, Goya CEO and a grandson of the founders, spoke at a Rose Garden event announcing a 'Hispanic Prosperity Initiative' on Thursday.
'We all truly blessed, at the same time, to have have a leader like President Trump who is a builder,' Unanue said standing at a podium beside Trump. The appearance sparked an immediate boycott movement from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other prominent latinos.

Earlier this week, Trump threatened to hold back money from elementary and secondary schools that refuse to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic.
His press secretary insisted he actually wanted to increase funds.
Trump on Friday blasted the long-distance learning techniques schools have used to cope with lockdowns.
'Now that we have witnessed it on a large scale basis, and firsthand, Virtual Learning has proven to be TERRIBLE compared to In School, or On Campus, Learning. Not even close! Schools must be open in the Fall. If not open, why would the Federal Government give Funding? It won’t!!!
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Wednesday that Trump wants to increase school spending, even though earlier in the day the president threatened to cut federal funding if schools do not reopen in the fall.
'He wants to increase funding and CARES for education,' the White House press secretary asserted during a press conference Wednesday afternoon. 'But he's looking at potentially redirecting to make sure it goes toward the student and is most likely tied to the student and not to a district where schools are closed.'
'In Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and many other countries, SCHOOLS ARE OPEN WITH NO PROBLEMS,' Trump tweeted before her comments.
'The Dems think it would be bad for them politically if U.S. schools open before the November Election, but is important for the children & families,' he wrote, adding: 'May cut off funding if not open!'
