Thousands of people protesting over the death of George Floyd remained on the streets after sundown on Tuesday as law enforcement worked to enforce curfews in cities across the US.
In Atlanta, tensions flared between police and protesters just before a 9pm curfew went into effect as officers launching tear gas into crowds were met with an onslaught of water bottles and fireworks.
In New York City, officers attempting to wind down a day of peaceful demonstrations reportedly arrested at least 40 people for breaking a 7pm curfew as looting broke out at businesses around Manhattan.
And in Los Angeles, dozens of protesters staged a post-curfew sit-in outside Mayor Eric Garcetti's home. They held up their hands and chanted: 'Peaceful protest' while ignoring police orders to move.
Law enforcement in Washington, DC, were met with similar resistance as they attempted to clear the streets outside the White House.
Hours after the city-wide 7pm curfew hit, hundreds of people were still gathered in Lafayette Park and showed little intention of going home as they chanted against the curfew.
It came as the Pentagon confirmed that about 1,600 active duty troops had been moved to the DC area from Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Drum in New York to assist local authorities in containing the unrest.
Scenes in cities around the country were much calmer on Tuesday evening than they were on preceding nights, which saw thousands of people arrested and widespread destruction by rioters and looters.
But law enforcement were once again heavy-handed with efforts to break up crowds for fear that chaos would ensue after dark.

The US has been rocked by seven straight nights of tumult since George Floyd, a black man, was killed in Minneapolis after a white police officer pinned him to the ground by kneeling on his neck last Monday.
Floyd, who was in handcuffs at the time, died after the white officer ignored bystander shouts to get off him and Floyd's cries that he couldn't breathe.
His death, captured on citizen video, has sparked days of protests in Minneapolis that quickly spread to cities across America.
While many of the demonstrations around the country have been peaceful, others have descended into violence - despite curfews in many cities and the deployment of thousands of National Guard members over the past week.
President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to threaten to call in the military unless state governors crack down, inflaming tensions further.
The NYPD sent out a large number of officers to patrol the streets of the Big Apple as an 8pm curfew went into effect on Tuesday and thousands of demonstrators refused to comply.
Mayor Bill de Blasio doubled down on the citywide curfew by moving it up from 11pm the night before, but rejected urging from President Donald Trump and an offer from Gov. Andrew Cuomo to bring in the National Guard.
'Everyone, time to go home so we can keep people safe,' he said on WINS-AM radio shortly after 8pm.
Police initially let some groups of protesters continue marching. 'I'm surprised,' said Risha Munoz, on Manhattan's Upper West Side, where at points they were greeted with cheers and horns by onlookers in building windows.
'I didn't think they were gonna let us go on, but we just kept on moving and we're not stopping.'
'Something has to break, and it's not going to be us,' said Evan Kutcher, one of hundreds of demonstrators who stood outside the Barclays Center chanting Floyd's name Tuesday evening.
'We're here because something needs to change. We hear Cuomo and de Blasio everyday saying what's happening is unacceptable but with no actionable plan from them.'

But police began making arrests around 9pm and shut down parts of the West Side Highway in lower Manhattan, blocking it off to huge crowds of protesters.
The police department announced it would not allow vehicle traffic south of 96th Street in Manhattan after curfew, though residents, essential workers, buses and truck deliveries were exempt.
'We're going to have a tough few days. We're going to beat it back,' de Blasio said in announcing that the 8pm to 5am curfew would remain through Sunday.
An officer-involved shooting happened in Crown Heights around 10pm Tuesday. A police spokesperson said no officers were injured and had no other immediate details.

The number of protesters who remained out after dark was far below that which was seen in demonstrations earlier in the day as massive crowds gathered in Foley Square, Washington Square Park and Times Square.
In Washington, DC, Senator Elizabeth Warren joined demonstrators marching toward the White House amid a heavy presence of police and active duty Army personnel called in by President Donald Trump.
Video showed protesters cheering for Warren as one approached her and asked: 'Why does Trump got the military out here?'
'Because he's wrong,' the Democrat congresswoman replied emphatically. 'He is imposing violence on our people. People are here to protest peacefully.'
After the 7pm curfew went into effect, hundreds of people remained on the street - some of them protesting and others waiting to cast ballots in the city's primary election.

Bethesda Magazine reported that some Bethesda Row merchants were boarding up their businesses but anticipated a peaceful protest.
Montgomery County police Second District Commander Sean Gagen wrote to the Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce on Monday that he contacted a student organizer to discuss the protest and assure organizers that they are free to protest peacefully.
'Out of an overabundance of caution, businesses are taking it upon themselves to protect their property. We plan on having an increased presence with our police officers down in the CBD (central business district) in Friendship Heights area and throughout the commercial establishments in the district,' he said.
'So people should see a larger number of police cars than they normally would. But that's us being proactive.'

As cities around the US witnessed a seventh straight night of both peaceful demonstrations and bursts of theft, vandalism and attacks on police, the president amplified his hard-line calls of a day earlier, in which he threatened to send in the military to restore order if governors didn't do it.
Social media feeds went dark and quiet on Tuesday as tens of millions of people showed solidarity with the black community following the death of George Floyd in US police custody.
As part of an initiative called Blackout Tuesday, social media users shared black squares and paused posting on their profiles as they called for racial equality.
Statistics from Instagram alone showed posts with the hashtag #blackouttuesday had been used more than 22 million times by Tuesday evening – while related tags #blackoutday2020 and #theshowmustbepaused were also used hundreds of thousands of times.
