WATCH: Bill Maher Laments The ‘Cancer On Progressivism’ As Democrats ‘Race To The Far Left’

HBO "Real Time" host Bill Maher appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Thursday to issue a scathing rebuke of political correctness and the woke "cancer on progressivism" that he claims has plagued the Democratic Party.

"How maddening is that to you that they’re having this race to the far Left?" asked host Joe Scarborough.
"It’s not good. It’s kind of this cancer on progressivism. I’ve been saying this for years," said Maher. "First of all, you have to stand up to Twitter. Twitter isn’t us. Twitter isn’t the rank and file Democrat. It’s not even most liberals. But they don’t do it."
"This race is begging for someone to do kind of a 'sister soldier' moment with that far left," continued Maher. "This is the Democrats' race to lose."
Maher suggested that Democrats come out in full favor of legalization of pot and other single issues that would excite the progressive base.
"If you run on taking away people’s healthcare, and taxing them too much, and taking away all their guns, and trans women get abortion rights, I don’t think you’re gonna win this election," he lamented.
The conversation then shifted to how political correctness has weakened the Democratic Party.
"They project kind of weakness, and I think it is internal," said Maher. "I mean, you see them already apologizing too much for things that really don’t merit an apology. Obviously, if you do something terrible you should apologize for it. But we’ve seen it up and down the ranks, that people who have had to start their campaigns — and it is not a good way. You keep saying, 'You’re sorry,' you look like a sorry candidate. People think, 'Well, gee whiz, why am I voting for this guy? He’s tripping over himself to say he did this wrong. She did this wrong.'"
Maher added that the Trump voter largely sees his flaws as a person but ultimately fears the extreme leftism exhibited by progressives.
"The Trump voter, I don’t think they are blind to Trump’s myriad flaws," he continued. "If you talked to them, what they always say, what they like about him is he’s not politically correct. You know, he doesn’t back down. Especially that thing about political correctness. I think we underestimate how much America has been choking on political correctness for 25 years. Somebody should have done a show about that years ago. It would have been a good idea."
Maher said that Britain should serve as a warning sign for the United States. In Britain, the Conservative Party's Boris Johnson has ascended to prime minister because the alternative, Jeremy Corbyn, is a left-wing extremist that frightens people.
"Boris Johnson is a kind of a Trump figure, and he’s doing horribly," Maher said. "The people don’t like him. But what do you have on the left? Jeremy Corbyn, someone who is so scary to middle of the road voters, and we don’t want the same thing to happen. I love Elizabeth Warren, but she does scare me a little bit. Because again, all we have to do to win this election is not be scarier to people than Donald Trump."
