Scarlett Johansson Backs Elizabeth Warren 2020: ‘There’s A Strategy There’

After withholding her endorsement of any candidate for months, actress Scarlett Johansson has come out in support of Sen. Elizabeth Warren's (D-MA) bid for the White House in 2020.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the promiinent actress said that Elizabeth Warren "feels like someone who is thoughtful and progressive but realistic."
"It's not like her campaign is making these crazy, outlandish promises that seem impossible to reach. There's a strategy there," said Johansson.
The actress also lamented about how Democrats cannot seem to settle on a candidate at this early juncture.
"Other Democrats have said to me, 'Oh, it's really early to back someone,'" Johansson said. "That kind of worries me because it doesn't feel that early to me. I'm like, 'Really?' It's disconcerting that there's not a clear candidate at this time."
Regardless of who gets the nomination, Scarlett Johansson said she will be using her Hollywood bona fides in whatever way possible to get out the vote for Democrats in 2020.
"I'll be there however I'm needed," she said. "If I can help with voter engagement, whether it's doing some sort of PSA campaign or actively trying to involve people in the process of registering and voting. I really believe if people actually did vote, our government would look the way it's supposed to, but people just don't vote. It baffles me."
As noted by The Hill, Scarlett Johansson became an early supporter of Elizabeth Warren by donating the maximum amount to her campaign this past July. Her endorsement of the candidate differs from the more nuanced approach to politics she showed in April of this year, when she told Variety that the Democratic Party is "broken in a lot of ways."
"Although now is certainly the time to back someone," she said. "I think I have to do a little soul searching. I think the Democratic Party is broken in a lot of ways and just damaged from these past several years. For me, if there was one candidate that I felt we could all unite behind, certainly that would be the candidate that I would back."
When asked for her thoughts on former Vice President Joe Biden entering the race, Johansson simply said, "I don't know." As to whether or not allegations of past inappropriate touching will sink him, the actress also said, "I'm not sure."
Johansson saw her star power slightly slip in 2017 when both films in which she headlined that year — "Ghost in the Shell" and "Rough Night" — failed to attract either audiences or critical acclaim. Leading up to the release of "Ghost in the Shell," Johansson actually said that audiences who disagree with her politics should stay home rather than a buy a ticket.
"If fighting, you know, for women’s rights, for women’s reproductive rights, and you know, in support of Planned Parenthood, if that’s going to, you know, mean that some people don’t want to buy a ticket to see 'Ghost in the Shell,' then … I’m OK with that," she told "Good Morning America."
