Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has hit back at Liz Cheney after being called out by the House Republican leader in a Twitter spat over constitutional history.

Cheney slammed Cortez after she claimed last week that the 22nd Amendment was created to stop President Franklin D. Roosevelt running again, despite him dying two years before it passed.

In a scathing outburst on Twitter, Cheney wrote: 'We knew the Democrats let dead people vote. According to @AOC, they can run for President too.'

Straight away Ocasio-Cortez hit back, tweeting a link to a Newswekk article on the subkect: 'Hey Rep. Cheney, I see from your dead people comment that you get your news from Facebook memes, but the National Constitution Center + Newsweek are just two of many places where you can clarify your misunderstanding of the history of the 22nd Amendment.'

Tweeting a link to the NBC interview Cheney mocked Ocasio-Cortez for her lack of knowledge

The article she linked to says the legislative process for the 22nd Amendment began in 1944, before FDR's death.

Quoting an online post from the National Constitution Center, the article appears to support the freshman Congresswoman's claim.

'Talk about a presidential term-limits amendment started in 1944, when Republican candidate Thomas Dewey said a potential 16-year term for Roosevelt was a threat to democracy,' the center reportedly wrote on its website.

'In March 1947, a Republican-controlled Congress approved a 22nd Amendment, with an exception that would exclude a president in office from term limits during the ratification process.'

Cheney then replied: 'Hey @AOC, I know you’re busy so I thought this short video would be helpful to introduce you to the basics of the Constitution.

'If you’re still trying to figure out how a bill becomes a law, they have a great video on that, too.'

But Cheney wasn't finished and tweeted her own link to a YouTube video which appeared to dispell AOC's claims

'They had to amend the Constitution of the United States to make sure Roosevelt did not get reelected,' Ocasio-Cortez said Friday during a night hall event with MSNBC with Chris Hayes.

Ocasio-Cortez was referring to the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution which passed in 1947.

The text of the amendment states, 'No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.'

However, FDR, served for 12 years as the 32nd president of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945.

The amendment for the implementation of presidential term limits was made two years after FDR died and was ratified in 1951.

While it was most likely a rebuke of FDR for his decision to ignore the two-term precedent set by George Washington, it could not have prevented him from running again.
