  1. In all fairness, these are not simple cases of self regulation failing. There are now and have been for centuries, laws in effect to stop and to punish people or companies who defraud, poison or otherwise endanger the public. The failure is that the government did not do its job of enforcing the law. If a murderer escapes justice by bribing the police and the judges, we don't claim that "we just need stronger laws against murder!". No, we realize that the failure is in the justice system. Same thing with big business. They simply bribe politicians and judges, who then look the other way. The solution is not more regulations, the solution is prosecute them for the damages they have done. The laws already cover these things.
