Utah teen crashes car while driving blindfolded during 'Bird Box' challenge

A Layton, Utah, teenager crashed her car while driving blindfolded during a so-called “Bird Box" challenge.
"Bird Box" is a Netflix film that features people covering their eyes to protect themselves from an unseen force. And it has morphed into a social media challenge that has people while trying to complete various tasks while blindfolded.
Believe it or not, that includes driving.
The 17-year-old was driving on Layton Parkway when she covered her eyes with a beanie cap and lost control of her vehicle around 4:50 p.m. Monday, KUTV-TV reported. Her vehicle skidded into an opposite lane, struck another vehicle, and then crashed into a light pole and sound wall, the report states. No injuries were reported.
Layton police posted pictures of the accident and wrote on Twitter : "Bird Box Challenge while driving...predictable result."
The teen could face a reckless driving charge, police said.

What are police saying?

Police and Netflix have issued warnings in an attempt to stop people from driving with their eyes covered.

In addition to police, Netflix has warned about the bird-brained challenge. On Jan. 2 Netflix tweeted:
“Can't believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don't know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes."

Colorado Police posted a video that predicted: “Inevitably, somebody's going to do the monumentally stupid thing that is driving while blindfolded. We shouldn't have to say this, but we're gonna: Don't drive blindfolded."

How popular is the show?

Netflix announced that “Bird Box" had more than 45 million views, making it the most-viewed original movie in its first seven days. A view is counted when an account watches more than 70 percent of a movie. Netflix has also faced criticism over the accuracy of its view figures.
