On Sunday, a 39-year-old Lyft driver, a mother of two small children who was pregnant and in her third trimester with her third child, was stabbed to death by a 20-year-old passenger who killed the unborn baby in the process, then stole the car and drove 150 miles before he was apprehended.
Kristina Howato, 39, who had two children aged two and four, was working in Tempe, Arizona, when she got a request to pick up the suspect, Fabian Durazo, in the area southwest of Rio Salado Parkway and McClintock Drive, according to Sgt. Ron Elcock of the Tempe Police Department, Arizona’s Family reported.
According to police, after Howato drove Durazo to an apartment complex in her 2005 silver Mercury SUV, Durazo attacked her. Tempe police stated that Durazo stabbed Howato repeatedly inside the SUV; she managed to exit the vehicle but he continued stabbing her.
Durazo fled in the vehicle. Police responding to the incident found Howato; she was taken to a hospital where she and her unborn baby died from her wounds. Durazo drove all the way to within 25 miles of the state line of California before he was caught and arrested by police, who used GPS tracking to find him. Police said he was being held at La Paz County jail on suspicion of two counts of first-degree murder and one count each of kidnapping and armed robbery.
Elcock stated that Durazo admitted to stabbing Howato and taking her SUV. No indication that the suspect was on drugs at the time of the attack was given, and no indication was given that Durazo and Howato knew each other. Elcock said investigators think the incident was motivated by Durazo’s desire to steal a car, adding, "He ended up killing her in the process of stealing the vehicle.”
Elcock said at a news conference, "Throughout our careers as officers, we have incidents that really, really touch our hearts and stay with you throughout your careers. This is definitely one of those incidents that really is going to affect the police department for a long time.”
Lyft offered a statement, saying, “We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of this tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims. The safety of the Lyft community is our top priority. The passenger’s account has been permanently deactivated and we are actively assisting law enforcement with their investigation."
Arizona State University told Arizona's Family that Durazo attended classes in 2016 but is not currently a student of the university. The Washington Post reported, “It was not immediately clear whether Durazo has an attorney in the case.”
On Sunday night in Charlotte, North Carolina, a passenger allegedly attacked an Uber driver. The driver said, “The guy kicked me in the head, and he screamed, 'You were supposed to like me, you were supposed to like me … He attacks me through the door, puts all his weight on me, and says to me 'I’m going to kill you.’” The incident only ended when witnesses got involved. Police accused the suspect of hitting the Uber driver and a woman who came to his aid.
